The Napa-Solano Central Labor Council (AFL-CIO), whose 45 affiliated unions represent over 45,000 members across Solano and Napa Counties, has selected a new Executive Director. By a vote of the various unions of the Council, Glenn Loveall, previously on staff with the Labor Council, and several other unions, has been appointed as Executive Director, succeeding longtime labor leader Jon Riley.
Born and raised in Fairfield and the son of a local public-school Teacher and an Engineer, Loveall has long been active in the community and on workers’ issues. Following his graduation from Armijo High School, Loveall earned Bachelors’ Degrees at UC Davis and an M.A. from UC Riverside. After serving as a staffer for Congressman John Garamendi, Loveall joined the Labor movement as Political Coordinator for the Iron Workers Union Local 378 before being hired onto staff at the Labor Council.
“With interest in unions at a historic high, driven by workers who are fighting for better working conditions and a better quality of life, there is a huge opportunity to address the rising gaps between the wealthy and the rest of us,” said Loveall. “Over the coming months, the Napa-Solano Central Labor Council and its various member unions and community allies look forward to expanding our advocacy for workers and for strong, widely shared growth across Solano and Napa Counties.”
Loveall succeeds Jon Riley, who has served workers for 40 years, first as Vice President Emeritus of Firefighters Local #1186, and has held the position of Executive Director since 2009, following his time as President of the Labor Council (2005-2009). As Executive Director, Riley oversaw various successful strategies, coalitions, and a significant growth in the membership of the Labor Council. He will remain with the Council as Director of Community and Political Affairs through the General Elections in November 2024.
“I’ve been so proud of my work on the council,” says Riley. “When the house of Labor shows up, we make things better for working people everywhere, and that is a beautiful thing. I’m so happy to see that the Council will continue to thrive in Glenn’s competent hands.”
